Choreographer, performer, musician and teacher Rae Bowhay began her career in contemporary dance in the early 90s in Los Angeles.
Her desire to work with live music led her to flamenco, which triggered an irresistible urge to pursue this art form. to read more ↓ She moved to Montreal in 1996 and began studying with extraordinary local teachers (Lynne McGee, Patrick Schupp, Marie Parisella) and guest teachers from Spain (La Chiqui, Javier Cruz and many others over the years). She returned to Spain to breathe again the air, images and sounds she experienced in 1991 (the first time she immersed herself in this art at its source - it's a love story..). There she took classes with incredible maestra/os such as Juana Amaya, Manolo Marín, Domingo Ortega and Manuel Reyes.
With a solid background in movement and performance, Rae launched herself onto the Montreal flamenco scene in the early 2000s, and hasn't looked back since. Her ‘rebel with a cause’ attitude and curiosity to find authentic expression in this traditional form has resulted in original works and collaborations with talented and inspiring local and international artists. Rae has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts for numerous projects and received the Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award in 2005 for outstanding achievement in dance. ➡️ BIO / photos / video |
